I second this recommendation. The kids today might not believe this but 20 years ago Mike Davis was dismissed by many as an apocalyptic crank obsessed with arcane topics like pandemics, wildfires, and climate change.https://twitter.com/EricLevitz/status/1254433947875975170 …

The Mike Davis book on avian flu is 💯. For price of admission, you get the most lively/accessible science writing I've ever read + a history of influenza outbreaks as suspenseful as any Crichton novel + a devastating socialist critique of the global ag and pharma industries.

City of Quartz is one of the greatest books written on Los Angeles.

Davis' Ecology of Fear has some of the best writing on how rebuilding after wild fires disproportionately benefits wealthy white people but causes few deaths, contrasted with apartment building fires in DTLA/Boyle Heights kills many & disproportionately kills BIPOC from low SES.

Biggest knock again at the brilliant Davis was empirical errors in City of Quartz.

A lot of that pushback came from LA boosters.

I remember the scathing reviews in mainstream publications when that book came out.

@EricLevitz I read this as Miles Davis and was totally prepared to be impressed by his 90s crank science-writer phase
