How obscure? Val Lewton's string of 1940s horror movies are great (with 1945 "Isle of the Dead" -- about a pandemic -- especially pertinent).

Sturges is pretty close to being the Coens avant la lettre. Aside from the movies he wrote/directed there are also a slew of lesser known but still great movies he wrote but didn't direct in 1930s like Easy Living and Remember the Night.
