Preference intensity of the most rabid part of the herrenvolk base wins out. Donors/plutocrats not happy, but they still get endless tax cuts, deregulation, cronyist deals. So everybody “wins.”

I think they are linked. When donors are getting ***everything else they want*** and control/wrecking of the administrative state to boot, it turns out that cheapest labor isn’t that big a deal—they’re keeping labor plenty cheap enough anyway.

this is Melamed's extension of racial capitalism, too: sure, white supremacy was threatened by cold war moves to compete with Soviets by signaling egalitarianism. but filling out personhood itself as raced at level of position/access to resources also helped heal that wound

I take issue w that book in my own book. I think it entirely misses that the war on immigrants has been a war on “illegal immigrants” and on the border waged in such a way that biz was never bothered.
