      I have no beef against homeschooling and homeschoolers, but conservatives embracing libertarian defenses of homeschooling is yet another example of their lust for defeat. *Of course* the state should shape the morality of children.

      To this day, French politics is consumed with rancorous debates about national education -- what schools teach, how they can turn immigrants into Frenchmen, how much individual and group freedom is compatible with this republican mission, etc.

      The idea that the state can be morally neutral is an anglo-American fallacy. It doesn't really exist outside the English speaking world.

          My tweet had nothing to do w neutrality. Not every government sets a uniform education policy for the whole nation. When it does and the nation is culturally pluralistic, the result is a rancorous argument about who "we" are. The US aims to minimize this through decentralization.
