I can’t speak for matt but many people or that generation find/found it absolutely insane that people between Matt’s and mine’s age were moving by choice into the Lower East Side and then into Brooklyn where they worked so hard to escape it

Yeah Podhoretz’s conception of “Brooklyn” would have been 180 degrees from the one Matt is referencing. The distance between Brooklyn and Manhattan now is smaller than it’s been in 100 years or more.
