I think these are fair criticisms, but they are acknowledged in the study, too

Pretty sure Stanford's "overperformance" is due to Eran Bendavid, a respected epidemiologist who happens to be far outside the mainstream re: covid. His views have gotten a lot of attention because they're contrarian and attractive to people who want to end lockdowns.

Short answer is, it's where the money has accumulated. In Stanford DOM's defense, most of the pure garbage has been coming from other, totally unrelated departments. However, I'm boggled that they shrug off oversampling people with previous mild symptoms.

Maybe real scientists will have an idea as to why there's no retrospective self-report of symptoms or exposures in the study? Were they just leery of depressing response with a pre-test questionnaire? (Also possible they did do this and are still crunching those data.)
