Why aren't donors stepping up to rescue newspapers while they can be saved cheaply? One day they will realize they can't have democracy without journalism, and will need to build them back from scratch at much greater cost.https://twitter.com/amymbrothers/status/1251286962792611841 …

Today was my last day at @denverpost after 5.5 years. I found out I was getting laid off while on assignment. I couldn’t cry, you can’t get masks wet and it’s dangerous to touch your face during this pandemic. Since then I’ve been going through a lot of emotions. A THREAD (1/17) pic.twitter.com/dQTeE6Rgq3

Canada's newspaper bailout (and larger funding for media) has problems but is keeping papers alive and might be a model worth looking at.

No, it's not Gvt should not fund media. We hear from the idiots in the media how they are supposed to be a 'watchdog' on government. How can they be a watchdog on the entity who they depend on for funding?

Newspapers should be funded by readership, period. If an outlet is engaged in actual investigative journalism without bias and corporate direction, it will be read and make $$. Government and journalism should never be in bed together. Unfortunately this is already happening.
