I am consistently amazed at the fact that neatness has absolutely no appeal at all to little kids. It's like learning to love the way a clean, orderly place looks is a bigger leap than learning how to read.

My 3 1/2-year-old hasn't even gotten to that point. (I give the 21-month-old a pass.) He treats his own room like he's that 1970s metal band in a hotel room.

My daughter is 49; and from the time she was 2 I did everything to get her to keep her room clean. In her 20’s a guy broke up with her over it. She is still the same. My son is OCD clean. Same upbringing, same chores, total opposites.
