yeah, prior to this little project i had only ever seen 2001, CLOCKWORK and THE SHINING, and those were when i was a callow 18/19-year-old. i’m looking forward to revisiting CLOCKWORK now that i’m in my 30s and have a little more experience to my name.

The Shining is incredible. A two-hour heart attack.

It's challenging, but Ebert's original negative review of it holds up - the film's a mess and it ends up celebrating whatever evil it's supposed to be critiquing. Granted, the book is muddled in the same way , so not entirely Kubrick's fault.
