I think one issue is binary thinking. There are various levels of social distancing, mask-wearing, and test-and-trace to slow the spread and to reduce risk to those most vulnerable. It’s not just on or off, open or closed.

I do think it’s important to emphasize that “flatten the curve” doesn’t necessarily reduce deaths - other than excess deaths that result from the health care system being overwhelmed - it just spreads things out more evenly.
