My guess would be that elections weren't so tightly targeted until polling got good enough that campaigns *knew* exactly which states would be the battlegrounds.

Presidential campaign events didn't become common until some time in the 20th century, I think. National advertising came in with TV. Before that, it was probably up to local party organizations to get people out to the polls.
