      1. As the presumptive nominee, Biden is in pretty good shape for the general. He's consolidating support in the party and has a robust lead in national polls. The one weak area is enthusiasm, where he's weakest Democratic candidate in 2 decade.pic.twitter.com/UMG4QEzSWU

      2. This recent article runs through the numbers: "Indeed, strong enthusiasm for Biden among his supporters – at just 24% – is the lowest on record for a Democratic presidential candidate in 20 years of ABC/Post polls." https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/biden-consolidates-support-trails-badly-enthusiasm-poll/story?id=69812092 …

      3. Relatively low enthusiasm might not matter in an age of negative polarization. Plenty of voters hate Trump so much they'll vote for any Democratic nominee. But in those states you need not just those voters but also more marginal voters.

      4. Like Hillary Clinton in 2016, Biden will absolutely get the very large anti-Trump vote. The tricky thing -- made all the trickier because election will be under in the shadow of covid-19 & renewed voter suppression -- is getting out marginal voters in swing states.

          5. I talked to some activists in Pennsylvania who have been working hard to win back those disaffected marginal voters (young voters including young POC, rural former Democrats) about the enthusiasm problem:https://www.thenation.com/article/politics/democrat-pa-biden-problem/ …

It doesn't seem so tricky... there were people on the fence who voted for Trump just to see what would happen... and now they know.

But by definition marginal voters are going to be the least enthusiastic votes, so the enthusiasm gap seems irrelevant to the “have to turn out marginal voters” argument.

Within living memory Democrats had a candidate who was good at generating enthusiasm among marginal voters: Barack Obama.

You mean the kind of marginal voters that didn’t turn out to vote even though Bernie based his entire campaign strategy on them turning out to vote for him?

The other problem, not much mentioned, is 4.4 million votes for Gary Johnson and 750k for Evan McMullin returning to Trump in 2020.

Good point. Might be fair to expect they'll stay home? Would be good if someone would poll those people. Alas, I think the problem is that the key people in WI, PA, MI will not show up for Biden, either.

It may well be that there are considerably more Americans who are prepared to vote against Trump in November than we'd anticipate right now. Trump understood this intuitively when he pouted and withdrew whilst in Paris in 2018

That’s the same attitude that cost Hillary. If Joe Biden is the nom, we are screwed, he can’t talk, his wife has to be on his live streams now to guide him. He will fall apart in the debates
