I'm very curious about the process whereby Martin Scorsese's tender, bittersweet character study Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974) was adapted into a successful brassy workplace sitcom, Alice (1976-1985). How the hell did that happen?

I totally buy it. In the early- to mid-seventies NYC, people from all walks of life were getting their hack license -- it was good extra money at a time when money was losing it's purchasing power. There was already a mystique around the job prior to Taxi Driver....
