The big takeaway of the primaries is that the Dem establishment is way more powerful and unified than anyone gave it credit for. Dem leaders don't want to say that out loud because it would implicitly admit that Biden won big in spite of running a terrible campaign by any metric.

correct. The Dem base isn't conspiracy-addled and doesn't have a problem where its politicians are afraid to say quiet parts loud. Running against the party and its leaders is and was always dumb. Base voters are ready for social democrats, but not a cranky anti-partisan.

It's less that they're offended by what the cranky guy said than that they don't believe cranky guys can win elections.

The GOP base went from being mostly evangelicals+country clubs (e.g. Bush, Romney) to anyone who wants to OwnTheLibs. Here in SC, I got pretty leftish friends who voted Trump because they despise the Tesla/Subaru driving liberal archetype.

I would be wary of reading too much into one election cycle, and especially wary of analysis that seems to forget/ignore who the opponent is and the reaction he incites in the Democratic base.
