One problem with excess death figures is that there are a lot fewer deaths of other types, for example motor vehicle accidents.

And given the scale of the populations (car drivers and infected) at the beginning of the outbreaks, it’s a disaster to disentangle.

One easy way to show this is with graphs of the weekly/daily death rates for various years. Here's a graph for an Italian city - https://www.corriere.it/politica/20_marzo_26/the-real-death-toll-for-covid-19-is-at-least-4-times-the-official-numbers-b5af0edc-6eeb-11ea-925b-a0c3cdbe1130.shtml …pic.twitter.com/amiR7XCi8b

Also I imagine some number of people are going to die of totally other causes that might have been preventable if hospitals were not completely overwhelmed by coronavirus. I know those are not the same thing but still part of the overall damage done by the disease.

If you haven gotten tested & die at home from Covid-19 chances are you won't get tested (why use a test on a corpse that could have been used on a sick person instead?). As such, you will not be counted.

Look at death, hospital beds, and ventilator usage. Ignore case count.

I’ve been saying this too. We do this pretty well for calculating excess death & morbidity from heat waves.
