Where does Obama fit on this spectrum? There were certainly establishment figures encouraging him to run (Harry Reid), but he was also an insurgent running against two major establishment candidates, Clinton and Edwards

I think that’s another think likely to change with age. Sanders-style politics is immensely popular with AA under 40. Those voters are less wedded to the traditional networked coalition building politics that AA communities have used in the past.
