Those of us who supported "Free College" are now willing to repudiate the idea, right? No way state governments can make up those revenue gaps.

they can't make up any revenue gaps now, so if your solution is austerity and belt tightening contragulations on helping usher in a second Great Recession

I can assure you there will be belt-tightening even under very generous aid to state governments, one way or the other. By calling it "my solution" you are choosing to live and think in the dark. Walk into the light!

The "light" in this case is massive federal support of state budgets to stave off the kind of austerity that will transform this into a multi-year recession. Tho I suppose one upside is a recession will allow all kinds of people to start lecturing about "skills mismatch" again

What is likely and what should happen are different things. I'm trying to stay focused on the latter so we don't undergo years of avoidable misery like we did very recently while lots of very smart people cheered it on by getting it all very wrong.

I suggest you speak to more people working in the sector about the actual realities, and which "shoulds" are still on the table.

Is your view that Uncle Sam is limited in his capacity to cover state budget gaps because dramatically increasing outlays would result in intolerably high levels of inflation? If so, what evidence do you have for that premise? If not, why shouldn't the feds cover the gaps?

Fun fact: after the massive spending of the great depression and World War II and the early Cold War, Uncle Sam sill had money to massively expand higher ed (GI Bill etc.)
