I think it goes beyond class. Catholic reactionaries have a serious intellectual pedigree in continental thought & in philosophy/law/aesthetics/social theory have produced thinkers of the highest calibre. Where is the evangelical Heidegger or Marshall McLuhan?

Replying to @JHWeissmann @dylanmatt
Intellectual pedigree refers to fact that Catholic reactionaries have in multiple disciplines continued to produce a large body of scholarship that even non-Catholics (including liberals and leftists) have to take seriously, if they want stay abreast. Not true of evangelicals

Bingo. Historically in US, demotic evangelical churches and sects, in a race to the bottom to attract congregants, developed no intellectual centers of learning or high cultural theorists and exponents. High reactionary Catholicism just pulls the evangelicals along.

As
@cushbomb says, the US right wing has to keep the Catholic reactionaries because they are the only ones who do the reading.1 reply 1 retweet 6 likes
I'm tempted to say the only ones who can read -- I mean really read anything beyond Left Behind books and Bill O'Reilly histories.
