It’s actually shocking that a widely read talking head would say that, at a time of desperate shortage of medical capacity, it is practicing “eugenics” to advise not using a vent on a person with advanced dementia as opposed to using on a person with greater lifespan & capacity.

Unfortunately, a movement, even a good one, can’t unilaterally change the meaning of a word. Trying to do so seeds poor communication to the broader community, as was the case with your tweet.

Thanks guys. Good discussion.

I will share the part of the AL plan that got attention. Not eugenics. Most of the plan reflects medical recovery potential. But the statements on “moderate dementia” - caveated as they were- raised some concernpic.twitter.com/mZb4iJ0aLW

Not choosing in this case is a choice, and one that also has moral valance. You can't check out of this game. The ultimate responsibility lies with those responsible for any shortage of supplies but if that happens caregivers will have to choose. This is no hypothetical trolley.
