To put it another way, the economy is something made by humans and thus has a biological basis. You can't have what we think of as a normal functioning economy amid a pandemic that makes the entire health care system dysfunctional.

Many of the cost/benefit analysis arguments are ignoring the costs of an overwhelmed health care system, with hospitals packed to the gills and doctors forced every day to make countless Sophie's Choice decisions about who lives & who dies. Consider the trauma of that.

And if we're doing a cost benefit analysis, the cost will include the trauma and death inflicted on frontline medical workers. In Italy they're seeing doctors and nurses dying.

I know you're being funny, but this is not actually even very far from the immodest proposals of Very Serious People on TV so, I just, ugh.

They're also ignoring that it doesn't have to be a long shut down at all. It just has to be long enough to catch up and be ready for aggressive contact tracing and testing. See my pinned tweet. See South Korea, China, Singapore, Honk Kong.

I mean. Ok. But what if it is? What if there are waves? There are not even utilitarian arguments that can possibly justify the well-being of the market over doing everything we possibly can to save as many people as we can.

Consider the trauma of having to decide who lives and who dies? I mean...you've seen M*A*S*H, right? Doctors have to decide this in the battlefield all the time.

they're also completely ignoring what happens when a for-profit healthcare system that largely runs on razor-thin margins runs out of money that's going to start happening in april even if we maintain our current social distancing protocol

the argument is that if we loosen restrictions and just lie back and let it happen, society will keep functioning. really? where will we put a million bodies? who will handle their estates? who will adopt their kids? who will fill their jobs? what will become of doctors?
