1. Trump is flirting with the idea of scaling back the emergency response (including social distancing protocol) so the economy can get back to normal. But this goes beyond Trump: many on right, wall street & even centrists (Tom Friedman, Blankfein) want this. It's dangerous.https://twitter.com/business/status/1242076554232041477 …

3. The current discussion shows how views on medicine & economics align. There's a history to this. The 19th centuryAustrian medical school of therapeutic nihilism (which felt diseases should go untreated) was an influence on laissez-faire Austrian economics.

4. There's a fundamental divide with therapeutic nihilism and Austrian economics on one side (arguing against heroic interventions in medicine & economics) as against epidemiology and Keynesian economics on other side (arguing for action to ameliorate health & economic problems)

Yes, I was making this argument to a friend yesterday. Trying to go about business as normal works only if the pandemic isn't really bad. If it's bad, having millions of people deathly ill at once creates panic and kills the economy anyway.

Let’s forget about the economy. What happens if you need hospital care for something totally unrelated to COVID? Or are we suggesting that we don’t treat COVID at all? Just let them die? Is that the plan?

Also the issue is different states are doing different things. Here in MA Baker just ordered all nonessential businesses to be closed until April 7th and doubt he will undo that just because Trump tells him to.
