I'm not sure it's useful to look at the US coronavirus numbers as a whole. For now, it's probably best to think about four regions: 1) NYC metro 2) Washington state 3) California 4) Everywhere elsehttps://twitter.com/COVID19Tracking/status/1241838036427522050?s=20 …

Our 4 pm update is published. The US has now completed tests on at least 227,365 people, up 44,560 from yesterday's total. Note that we can only track tests that a state reports (for now). And not all states report all negative tests. For details, see: http://covidtracking.com  pic.twitter.com/UfTDbrMrMG

How much of the steepness of New York curve is due to testing surge?

You could look at the ratio of positive to negative tests.

There's been a testing surge in Washington state as well and while I expect it to spike the numbers a bit this next week, we basically closed everything a full week ago, the tech companies and banks had already been WFH for weeks, and the universities had already gone online-only

portland maine, which is now effectively isolated with community spread and competent public health (and homogenous demographic) is an eccellent laboratory for this.

Almost all of it. NY has done the most to try and test in a widespread capacity - emphasis on *try*. The lack of CDC lead means that they're fighting from behind at a time they really can't afford to be.

NY could have been a lot more proactive, I think. Or just ignored the CDC and let them sue the state in court.

Its definitely the largest factor - otherwise the doubling time of the virus is 2 days (it appears to be 4-5 days in most other datasets).

It is hard to know. The number of hospitalizations is no longer increasing quite as fast as the number of positives, which is a slight silver lining. But it seems clear that COVID-19 was spreading quickly in NYC as of a week or two ago.
