Attractive, but that could easily do more harm than good. Any deeper argument for this?

People who argue for such things often aren't aware of the leeway doctors already have for off-label use of existing drugs, and permission pharma companies get to test drugs in desperate circumstances. The rules are strict but the people making them are not callous or unthinking.
-
Doctors have way too much leeway in giving out drugs for the wrong illness (antibiotics for colds, unsafe amounts of cytotoxic to induce labor etc.) while the pharmacological companies are way too sheltered from the consequences of lax testing. Today is not the day for that fight

Saying deregulating the FDA without identifying which regulations are redundant and which insure safety is as stupid as what Trump has done on regulations.

There’s a reason so many vaccines fail and so many promising discoveries are discarded or have terrible unintended consequences. The body is still a mystery and good intentions are dangerous.

I'm not sure about that. How about fast-tracking, prioritizing instead? Especially when it comes to, say, academic labs rather than commercial ones. Seems to me some of the early problems were just stupid bureaucracy not acting when they should have jumped to it.

Any first-year graduate student in biomedicine could run tests if we waived clia compliance right now. Could easily scale up massively if we did this.

I could teach a middle schooler to do the benchwork, but labor isn't the issue, supplies and organization are.

Really, what is needed is provisional approval with more testing, and fast followup and feedback on the provisional use.

This was a big part of the ACT UP movement for AIDs drugs, no?
