But there are still not tests (unless you're a movie star or basketball player). My hospital/healthcare system only testing patients admitted to the hospital now: useless for prevention efforts.

Isn't there a third path, we sort of except the new normal, that 1%-2% of the infected population will die, but we keep the economy upright? Its not a good suggestion at all, I understand, but would it change the projections?

I literally dont think it can be done. Humans are social animals. You can't overstate the importance of that. People simply wont be able to isolate that long without radically authoritarian enforcement.
