Controversial take from my self-isolation reading: Boris Pasternak was not a very good writer of prose or novelist and "Doctor Zhivago" got the Nobel Prize for mostly political reasons.

Nabokov thought most people were bad novelists, didn't he?

Nabokov loved Proust, Kafka, Gogol, and Pushkin. He had no use for Joyce, Pasternak, and most American writers. The books of his lectures on literature to Cornell students are superb.
