If you are an American and under 37, your entire adult life has been under the shadow of the Forever Wars, the Great recession, a pandemic, and, it looks like, another recession. This is what is shaping the generational divide on politics.

What I don't get is, if you're American and over 37, you've still passed 20 years as an adult in this sorry state. Why are so many clinging to the status quo?

Because the older people remember a time when America was functioning (the 1990s boom) and they themselves benefitted from system.

We can't discount the fact that America is not just a democracy, but an ideological state. Just as older Russians still vote Communist, older Americans are infected with Cold War-era capitalist-patriotism.

And I think in equal measure they saw the power of collaborationist politics, and futility of more radical ideas. Boomers deeply, sincerely believe leftism loses elections.

And whats the excuse going to be next time? Trump is not an abberation, he is the republican party, their next candidate will just be a more malicious, competent version of the same. When will 'moderates' have a political ideology that looks further than the next election?

I'm a successful boomer and I still think America's been on a steady decline ever since I was first able to vote in 1980 and Reagan won.

Yeah I think Clintonism was just a way to create bubbles out of the decline, accelerating the overall fall.

I’m pretty sure everybody forgets about Gen X completely when they make statements like this. A lot of us were just getting started in our careers in our mid 20s when the dotcom bust and 9/11 happened. We had the promise of boom for years but none of the payoff.
