Bernie and Biden were Senate colleagues. As banal as it sounds, I think that partly explains his unwillingness to attack Biden with any real tenacity. Similar dynamic with Hillary in 2016, another former Senate colleague.

The core truth is that Bernie doesn't like negative campaigning. His campaigns in 2016 and 2020 were far less negative than, say, Obama/Clinton 2008. Old liberals don't see that because they hate Sanders so see even his mildest comments as negative.

I don’t know, his campaign sued the DNC in 2016. And he said the primary was rigged against him. He eventually criticized the corruption of the Clinton Foundation. But generally speaking, he refuses to really dig in. Also, he’s more than happy to go extremely “negative” on Trump

He could have gone far more negative on Clinton, Biden & DNC than he actually did The negative stuff on Trump (that he's a racist & a pathological liar) is true, whether you like it or not.

Yeah, so he has nothing against negative campaigning on principle as evidenced by his extremely negative rhetoric in relation to Trump

Sanders believes that Trump is a threat to American democracy and uniquely odious in his use of overt racism. I realize you don't share those views, but if you believe them, as Sanders does, then you have to use extremely negative rhetoric about Trump.

Ok, just don’t tell me he has a principled aversion to negative campaigning because that’s clearly not true

His staff probably does though, and that seems to be the one change that tracks 2016-2020. New staff, new messaging, worse results.
