      1. Amid the economic meltdown and Trump's disastrous mishandling of the pandemic, there's a natural desire for safety. Biden's "return to normality" message is gaining resonance based on that.https://twitter.com/NaomiAKlein/status/1237035866612211714 …

In times of crisis, it's natural to reach for the familiar. But familiar is not the same as safe. In 2008, Biden helped lead a bipartisan consensus that rescued Wall Street on the backs of working people. This time, put a people's champion in the White House. #Bernie2020

      2. We should be clear-eyed that even if we don't like "the return to normality" message, it has a lot of appeal -- not just in the primaries but in the general. Biden could win on it. But it's also a message that is has real risks in terms of governing.

      3. An Axios piece from this morning floating various appointments Biden could make gives a sense of what "return to normality" might mean in actuality; a return to the Democratic wing of Wall Street (with, maybe, a sop to the left with a Warren appointment).pic.twitter.com/pp9iJwDvXl

      4. The deeper problem with "return to normality" is a simple logical one: it was normality that got us into this mess by creating the conditions that elected Trump. Or as the man says.pic.twitter.com/mbvPu689D7

          5. In a deeper sense, we need to accept there will never again be normality, certainly not in an age of climate change. Our problems are only going to get bigger, which is why seeking comfort in familiar paths is a stopgap measure. It's an equally bad conceptual error to treat Trump as *only* symptom.

Not sure I concur. I think it was recent departures from normality that brought us to this pass.

The historical through line is pretty clear. The architects and beneficiaries of the Trump administration are literally the exact same people who orchestrated similar schemes for Nixon, Reagan, and the Bushes, for christssake.

People keep saying that the previous policies "created the conditions" that elected Trump. An alternative (albeit sliver lining-esque) explanation is that what we are seeing is the natural progression of white majority slowly losing power. Trump tapped into that.....

It was inevitable that someone would tap into the white grievance/panic over the looming end of white male demographic and political hegemony. And it is actually a good thing that we are confronting this openly as a society (or that's what I keep telling myself).

Well, “stay the course” actually got 3 million more votes last time around (yes, I know, electoral college). Trump successfully leveraged white grievance into an EC win, with help from a subset of leftists who thought his run would teach the Democratic Party a lesson.
