A rocky economy will benefit Democrats but there is also an opportunity for Trump to gin up his supporters with fear-mongering, focused on familiar targets like immigrants & globalists. Plus extolling values of national isolation. We're heading towards a new dynamic.

If one accepts that negative partisanship is entering hyperspace (Bitecofer, et al) it would make sense for the Dem electorate to produce a generic candidate at the top of ticket who triggers the least emotion, least passion--and let a parliamentary style vote wash over ballot.
