2. Reagan & Thatcher really seized the opportunity Gorbachev presented & pushed for not just greater diplomatic ties but also, just as important, cultural & business ties. Gorbachev, Thatcher famously said, was someone you could do business with. This drove the right crazy.

3. It was a widely shared belief in the west that contact with Western culture would help liberalize the Soviet bloc & help the transition to democracy. And that belief was correct! The people who complained about this at the time (Norman Podhoretz types) were wrong.

If you listen to more than the circulated clip, Sanders says Reagan was meeting with Gorbochev re the INF Treaty at the same time Sanders's delegation was in Moscow. Sanders said that the Russians he talked to had great respect for Reagan for opening dialogue. What a radical.
