haven't seen the show but "the plot against america" is philip roth for people who don't read philip roth, easily a sub-50th-percentile book that people only gas up because they like its politics (republican president bad)

I would say American Pastoral or Human Stain.

It's also a terrible character assassination of Burton Wheeler. Roth didn't do his research but wanted a Cheney figure so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯http://www.ghostinthemachine.net/plot-foiled/

Historical fiction this rangy - wiping out our participation in the Second World War - takes liberties and isn’t required to match fact, even at the base line Wikipedia level. I excused repurposed figures in America’s mid century narrative to serve the audacious storytelling.

It is more disciplined than his strongest novels (e.g., Sabbath’s Theater), and has some grace notes of whimsy (Lindbergh’s Amelia Earhardt like disappearance).
