Unfortunately, she wasn't showing an ability to assemble a broad coalition or win a lot of votes. And BTW the party actually "decided" in the "party decides" sense late by historical standards. They needed someone to win big with a broad coalition. Biden (finally) did that

Warren's difficulty was that she had to simultaneously prove she was no less progressive than Sanders & that she really was a Democrat with the political acumen to lead the party to victory. She couldn't find a formula were those two efforts did work in conflict with each other

I would argue that's because Sanders successfully branded her as centrist, i.e. without a Sanders candidate, Warren would have taken most of his supporters and by devoting her energies to promoting her very considerable political skills, convinced the rank and file that she was
