I'm teaching a course on "the nonfiction novel" in the fall. What comes to mind when you hear those words, in that order? What are your favorites? Who's written well on this, or on related topics (fictionality, factuality, literary journalism, autobiography, autofiction)?

True, there’s also an argument that Mitchell’s yarns were mainly fiction (great writing, though).

That can also be said about a lot of the New Journalism -- see the critiques made of Capote and Wolfe! I think it's hard to do a long "novelistic" narrative without some substantial invention/conjecture.
