I feel like maybe proper modifier is "safer" -- as in safer than Sanders. Or, maybe, "safest" among the remaining contenders rather than the original 2020 field. Not sure they're right, but not sure they're wrong either.

Sanders seems determined to run the race with a big old ball and chain stamped "socialism" fastened to his leg. You can Bernsplain 'democratic socialism' all you like, it's still risky.

Unfortunately you're right. His policies aren't radical from an objective POV, but the knee-jerk aversion to socialism as a label is apparently enough to turn off large swathes of the boomer electorate.

Seriously, we should be questioning the soundness of a nomination process that gave us Biden as the best option. There's a real problem here that needs to be fixed. Are Trump and Biden really the two best candidates for the most important job in the nation?
