He'll need to bring A LOT of Bernie supporters in. And I think he can. The great majority are down to vote for the nominee no matter what. The key question is what sliver defect. Doesn't have to be big to be a huge problem.

Right. Polling shows all the major candidates are popular with large majority of Dems. The problem is that Biden's message (return to normality) doesn't resonate (I think) with a few crucial marginal voters (young, working class). You need those voters.

Democrats don't have a problem with their old partisans showing up. The younger voters are more marginal and need more motivation.

So to understand: you’re saying you’d think Bernie be a better president than Biden, but that, as we sit here today, Biden has a better chance to beat Trump? Did I get that right?

I think Matt is saying both Biden & Sanders have a path to beating Trump, but that Sanders (from his point of view) would make a better president.

I think that too, especially on foreign policy. But I think either of them will impede that path to victory if they don’t jointly work to unify the party at the end of this fight. And I sense their twitter followers—including sophisticated ones—don’t fully grok that.

Well, if it's any consolation, I think both Biden & Sanders are far more nimble & better at coalition building than their twitter followers. Once you have a winner, the outreach will begin, no matter who it is.

I read a story where Bernie explained he didn't want to be a Dem cuz he didn't want to work w/in the coalitions that make up the party. He always wanted to be able to go his own way w/out "consequence" from party leadership. Doesn't sound like coalition building to me.

I think so too. But I think Biden's better at it than Sanders is. If nothing else, evidence suggests Biden can hire far better people.
