That’s all of saying. Part of liberals reconciling with the left is to acknowledge that.

I agree. Whether it's Sanders or Biden the winning side needs to craft a story the other faction can be part of. Needs to be both true and work.

Part of my anxiety is that I think the one candidate who is best positioned to craft a unity message to bring both sides in (Warren) has almost no shot at the nomination.

He'll need to bring A LOT of Bernie supporters in. And I think he can. The great majority are down to vote for the nominee no matter what. The key question is what sliver defect. Doesn't have to be big to be a huge problem.

Right. Polling shows all the major candidates are popular with large majority of Dems. The problem is that Biden's message (return to normality) doesn't resonate (I think) with a few crucial marginal voters (young, working class). You need those voters.

Democrats don't have a problem with their old partisans showing up. The younger voters are more marginal and need more motivation.

I'm not sure "merit" and optimal electoral coalition are mutually exclusive. I do think there's something to recommend to a candidate you can young into Democratic party, for the long term health of party.

Especially when there’s a global pandemic bearing down on us with a 10%+ fatality rate for Biden’s strongest supporters
