If this is going to be Biden's major theme, it's a problem.https://twitter.com/joseph_hower/status/1234672535477702657 …

If Buttigieg and Klobuchar's remarks are any indication, it seems Biden's camp is REALLY leaning into the "returning decency and dignity" to the White House. This weirdly Harding-esc campaign flies in the face of the dynamics that helped propel the past three election cycles.

It’s pretty much the only kind of campaign that he’s temperamentally suited for. He’s not an ideological transformer or a policy wonk or a bureaucratic manager.

Being a good man whose life has been scarred by tragedy is what he most convincingly projects. Yes, I understand he has often failed that standard, but that’s his brand. If you were his campaign manager, what else would you possibly recommend *for him*?

I am agnostic on this, but what’s the evidence this was a bad strategy last time?

The logic is: it was HRC's message, she lost, therefore it was a bad message then, therefore it will also be a bad message in 2020. (Last 2 steps are leaps that people treat as self-evidently true).

It's not just that she lost but also, crucially, that big chunks of the Obama coalition (young, including young POC) were demobilized by this message. To be fair, message did bring in some new voters in formerly GOP suburbs, but not enough.

You're assuming it was the message, not other things, that demobilized supporters. That may or may not be true.

OK, so what did demobilize them, and has that changed? If not, the message is still a disaster, because it obviously will fail to mobilize them again, having failed to mobilize them in the past.

Again, **if you have his specific strengths and weaknesses**, what would be better? Not if you’re Bernie. Or Warren (whose strengths are different from Biden and from each other.) But if you’re Joe Biden and, crucially, **voters have now seen Trump in action as president.**

Not a Biden guy, but I don’t think the crucial difference is that Biden is essentially promising people that he will make politics bring again so they can go back to ignoring it, and I think a lot of people really want that (even if it’s catastrophic in the long term).
