I pay a ridiculous monthly premium for myself and two adult kids. Last week I had relatively minor outpatient surgery and my share was $6,500.

Many people are likely unaware of how broken the system is either because they never use it, or only use it for routine checkups and/or GYN visits.

Pure double think. People know it sucks but have been scared into believing any attempt to make it better will actually make it worse, and so try to convince themselves on some level the current system is actually okay (even tho their own experiences scream otherwise)

He also missed how, if you have one chronic condition however minor, you need a stay-at-home partner who does nothing but track all the paperwork. Rich people can afford personal assistants; the middle class leans on spouses; the poor fall through the cracks.

you just implied that poor people don't have spouses

My 95 yr old mother fell last summer and broke her wrist - ER, stitches, Cat Scan, X Rays, Dr visits, casts, more X Rays, labs, pain meds, physical therapy, new glasses ... all covered by her Medicare Advantage plan. There are systems that work and I’m bloody grateful.

It's resignation, not denial. Modest healthcare reform took moving mountains to get a supermajority on board. People hate the current system, but a true fix would be that much more difficult.

I'm not surprised. Some people have no healthcare issues and rarely or never have to use their insurance, and if they're quite well off they've already lost most of their empathy so they are bound to think that the rest of us are lazy whiners.

It feels like a gilded case of
#UptonSinclair. To paraphrase; It is difficult to get someone to understand something, when their privilege & power depends on them not understanding it.

I don't go to the doctor with health insurance because I can't figure out how much extra it will cost.
