they aren't "safe" areas. They were longtime GOP areas that became Dem pickups. Western PA is old FDR coalition-land, that used to vote Dem but flipped to GOP because of racism. That realignment isn't changing whether we nominate sanders or bloomberg or warren.

It's not good to right off a huge chunk of the population as irredeemable & unresponsive to persuasion (or, to borrow a word, deplorable).

And yet, a huge swathe of the population is deplorable.

no, it's not. The Comey thing in the last week was. Without that, she wins. Without the Putin-Wikileaks hit she also wins.

clinton's poll numbers against Trump remained resilient after the deplorables comment. it just didn't do that much damage. The wikileaks crap had a slow attrition effect, but she was in commanding position a week before the election. Then the comey thing hit. that's reality.

Clinton herself in her memoirs cited the remarks as a factor in her defeat. Polls show there was a dip after remarks (see attached). She recovered but it clearly hurt her image among gettable voters. This is stupid politics and also a misunderstanding of racism.pic.twitter.com/0ijAH6YQgX

The question is whether she lost because of the "deplorables" comment and the polling doesn't come close to showing that. I don't think anyone's arguing that it helped her to point out that a large percentage of the electorate is deplorable, but it's not the point where she lost.

Given the closeness of the numbers, it's impossible to isolate any one factor. But it's bad politics and (for me just as important) a bad understanding of racism to talk about deplorables.
