Hawkish "anti-communism" was really a movement to oppose de-colonization and anti-imperialism, which used the fear of communism to justify policies no longer defensible after decline of openly imperialist ideologies.

Sure, but maybe "conservative" is the better word than "hawkish." JFK, arguably also Eisenhower, were pretty hawkish anti-communists while also unsympathetic to colonialism.
