Exactly right. And it's beyond dispute that where he overperformed, compared with Romney's losing campaign in 2012, was with lower-income voters. Yes, the Republican base is mostly middle-class and up. But he won by expanding the base down the income ladder.

for the purpose of determining electoral outcomes, "marginal" trump voters are very important, for the actual sociology of his base, looking at why older middle class men want this type of conservatism is important
