Damn - I’m one of the people on this site who actually can treat it with nuance, since I’ve actually read all this stuff. But Castro’s politics were not nuanced - he was a Marxist-Leninist when he took over Cuba.

Come on. Castro himself told Ignacio Ramonet, "By 10 March 1952, the day of Batista's coup d'etat, I'd already been a convinced Marxist-Leninist for several years."https://www.revolutionarycommunist.org/culture/245-review-fidel-castro-a-revolutionary-life-frfi-204-aug-sept-2008 …

The "he was just a nationalist" story never made sense. His brother was an avowed Communist, and Che, his most important revolutionary ally, was a Communist, but he was somehow just a nationalist until he has this conversion in 1960. It was always a dumb narrative.

This is what Khrushchev thought at the time. He told JFK that Castro was not a communist, but that Washington was turning him into one. Despite Che's obvious early committment and what Fidel said later, US-Cuba relations were very different in 1959 than they were in 1961.

Even if you choose to believe what Castro said much later, in the initial months of the revolution it was certainly not openly communist, and he hoped for good relations with the US. A lot of people in the US, definitely not just wackos, welcomed the revolution at first.

Bernie was 19 when he watched those Nixon / JFK debates. And it's true that JFK's administration only made things worse in Cuba (this has to do with CIA as much as him, but anyways). There is certainly nuance there, as Jeet said, you seem to want to erase.

Yeah, there are a lot of things in Bernie's record to criticize but I can't get mad at him because he would've opposed Bay of Pigs, exploding cigars, or teaming up with the mafia in order to bring the casinos & brothels back to Havana.

He was 39 years old in 1980, when he was an elector for the Trotskyist Socialist Workers Party, which called for “solidarity” with the revolutionary regimes in Iran (during the hostage crisis) and Cuba, among other authoritarian places

I don't think you have to worry about that if he becomes the nominee. And it will, unfortunately. 🤦‍♂️Don't need a weatherman to see which the wind blows on this.

It’s not about an ad. It’s about sustained mass media attention to it. It wasn’t about trumps ads about Hilarys emails. It was about the news media losing it mind and not writing about anything else.

Seems like a pretty cavalier response to what is, in an American political context, pure poison.

As a suburbanite, there’s no doubt it will. And the “political revolution” is not gonna materialize, as we’ve seen in the first two primary states
