I've seen the footage before, but the idea that this footage is going to be a fundamental game changer like every network has not been calling him a radical socialist and screaming Venezuela for the past 4 years is just a joke.

That's not even including the socialist label has been thrown out a million times prior to Sanders. The idea some undecideds are going to have a freak out over Sanders saying something about a country that doesn't even exist anymore is ludicrous.

I'm sure the sheer weight of a billion plus dollars going against him in the general will have an effect, but this is not uniquely damaging.

I don’t know about uniquely damaging, but I can’t believe it won’t hurt him in Florida when Trump coats the airwaves with footage of Sanders saying it almost made him puke to hear JFK talking about stopping communism in Cuba, because Bernie was so excited by the Cuban revolution.

He was talking about 1960 -- before Castro was a communist. The GOP will try to lose the nuance of this stuff, but should we?

Damn - I’m one of the people on this site who actually can treat it with nuance, since I’ve actually read all this stuff. But Castro’s politics were not nuanced - he was a Marxist-Leninist when he took over Cuba.

Come on. Castro himself told Ignacio Ramonet, "By 10 March 1952, the day of Batista's coup d'etat, I'd already been a convinced Marxist-Leninist for several years."https://www.revolutionarycommunist.org/culture/245-review-fidel-castro-a-revolutionary-life-frfi-204-aug-sept-2008 …

The "he was just a nationalist" story never made sense. His brother was an avowed Communist, and Che, his most important revolutionary ally, was a Communist, but he was somehow just a nationalist until he has this conversion in 1960. It was always a dumb narrative.

I'm not steeped in this stuff but I think the nationalist-who-had-a-conversion is what most historians think. Fidel's own account has the limits of any historical subject telling their story: i.e. rewriting past to fit present needs.

OK, if you want to say Castro was lying, and disregard all the other evidence, I don't know what to tell you.https://www.nytimes.com/1986/10/19/magazine/fidel-castro-s-years-as-a-secret-communist.html …

I'm just reporting what was the consensus of historians the last time I looked into this. It's possible that consensus has changed!
