It's not even any sort of "rebuke" to Trump, it's a PR op. Barr knows he needs to challenge the (correct) assumption that he's Trump's toady. He actually isn't embarrassed or bothered by the tweeting, he just needs to create that perception for minimal credibility with the press

Barr is being investigated by the NY bar & the Democrats.... that's what he should be focused on...NOT Trump's erratic tweeting! Trump will get what's coming to him the moment he DOESN'T have the protection of a CORRUPT & COMPLICIT GOP! His days are numbered!!!

I actually think there’s a false assumption here that Trump cares about Stone’s sentence. What Trump cares about is stoking his base on Deep State conspiracy theories and bitterness by screaming they’re being persecuted (like Stone) while Ds get away with literal murder.
-
I don't think that's entirely complete. He cares about the sentence if it causes Stone to sing more.

Why anyone would take Barr’s word is astonishing after the stuff he pulled with the Mueller report and pipeline with Guliani etc. And given the White House with a mild response it’s obvious.. if this were a genuine rebuke of Trump, Donald would be yelling on Twitter in all caps.
