If you tried to evaluate Trump’s political standing based on how elected Democrats generally approach him, you’d think he was a popular, well-liked incumbent.https://twitter.com/julianzelizer/status/1227936286293491713 …

Bloomberg's campaign messaging focuses on Trump's abnormality more than any of the others, its the central message of his candidacy!
-
Sure it is easy to see the parallels between the two but they are also pretty massively different in politics and styles in ways I would guess most Bloomberg voters like. I doubt many of his supporters see him as conceding Trump is the model of politics we must follow.

I really disagree with this. Bloomberg's posing himself as someone who can out-money and out-macho Trump, and I think that's how he's appealing.

Think being on twitter is skewing your read here. While I agree w your characterization of Bloomberg as a polite Trump, I strongly doubt that it’s the source of his boomlet given the content of the tv ads

It's been 3 years and Trump has faced no consequences for his actions. This is normal now. Whatever you think of him Trump ripped the fake facade of civility right off of society. Maybe it was always this way.

He's the 3rd president in history to be impeached.

Bloomberg’s appeal to those Dems who support him is that he can out-alpha male Trump. That is, they think he can beat him, which is the only point which all Democrats can agree is an essential characteristic for their nominee.

Bloomberg is not campaigning on, nor his rise in the polls been due to, the idea that he is a "more polite, sane Trump."
-
I think a lot of the liberals who have come around to Bloomberg are implicitly arguing the only way to fight Trump is with a liberal Trump (media savvy plutocrat, whose history of racism & sexism we have to overlook)
