this may be obvious to everyone else, but it just occurred to me that quentin tarantino making a "magic of movies" movie and then making his "last" movie is a very blatant play to finally get a best director/best picture oscar

I think because it was QT, it was both too crass and too obvious to work on the Academy. (Sam Mendes making a masturbatory ode to his own vision but dedicating it to his grandfather—who he claims told him the story it's based on—is a subtler, but more cynical play imo.)
