I actually think 50s were never that quiet, just a time of political uncertainty and disorientation, with postwar strikes, Wallace campaign, Bandung, Montgomery, Budapest, disarmament direct actions, McCarthyism, massive resistance, ending in 1960 sit ins. 60s really began in 50s

They were eulogized that way by so-called NY intellectuals (Trilling, Hofstadter, et al) who no longer were on the left and ironically also by their 60s heirs who sought to build a new one
