I remember a Republican once arguing that socialism had so destroyed the spirit of enterprise in Europe that the French don't even have a word for entrepreneur.

The version I read was older than that -- sometime in the 1980s, in a Christopher Hitchens column. It was some Reaganite (not Reagan but something like a cabinet member or advisor).
