I was under the impression that Plato had explicitly proposed this with his guardian class where children would simply be taken from their families and raised by the state. Not a big leap to expand that to all of society, I'm sure someone has suggested it in the 2000 years since.

I mean, it's not, not really. Not if socialism means "giving the government the means of production" in order to benefit the most people. You can achieve equality of opportunity while also nurturing a vibrant free market.
