1. Lost amid the impeachment drama, where Trump & Bolton were in opposition, is that Trump has pretty much accepted Bolton's foreign policy. Hard line neocons and ultra-nationalists are ruling the roost.

2. Bolton applauded the killing of Suleimani. He's surely pleased by Trump's giving the presidential seal of approval to annexation & transfer in Israel. Bolton & Trump disagree on Ukraine, but little else.

I think you're missing alot of the story here. Trumps wants talks with Iran; Bolton opposes it. Trump wants to pull out of Afghanistan. Bolton does not. They are fundamentally at odds over the DPRK. Bolton is also a skeptic of arms control negotiations w/ Russia which Trump wants

Trump wants those things but he's too incompetent to carry them out. And he is surrounded by people who are ultra-hawkish. Trump's bid to change foreign policy has failed.

That's not really accurate imo. The Iran talks failed because Iran wouldn't bite. Not for a lack of trying on the US part. Trump's DPRK policy is in place. He has actually taken funds out of Europe to pay for the wall. He has ceased any interest in Venezuela.

What is true I think is that Pompeo is in a position of dominance having gotten his people into place. To conflate Pompeo with neoconservatism is far too simplistic. His number one goal is to be Trump's successor. He does not fight for his positions when he think Trump is opposed

I'm working on something on Pompeo -- I think that's right but the compromise between Trump & Pompeo tends to result in hawkish policies plus protecting Trump's corruption. Not a good combination!
